January 2015

A Happy New Year message from The University of Michigan School of Public Health. I have a brief spot at 1:45. There are many great affirmations in here. My thoughts were simply an abbreviation of one of the greatest lessons I’ve learned which is, if we can change the way we think, we can change what we do.

I Have a Dream

Video Description: “On August 28th, 1963 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his “I Have A Dream” speech. In 2012, Oakland University students, faculty, and staff came together to deliver their version of his iconic address.”

This video was screened at the opening ceremonies of the annual Keeper of the Dream Scholarship Awards Celebration.

As a former Keeper of the Dream recipient myself, I was honored to be able to participate, however small a way, in this great work of collaboration. I have a brief cameo beginning at 0:56 in the recording.

CMI Men’s Retreat 2011

In September of 2011, I had an opportunity to be a presenter at the 1st Annual Men’s Retreat sponsored by the Center for Multicultural Initiatives at Oakland University.

During the retreat, I facilitated a workshop called “The Tipping Point” in which I was able to engage young men of color about those “crossroads” we might encounter in life in which we are forced to make tough choices. Through this workshop I was also able to facilitate discussions on personal responsibility, conflict management & resolution, good decision-making and avoidance of self-defeating behaviors.

While this clip doesn’t capture the workshops, it does capture part of the relationship building activities that took place on the first day of the retreat which fostered unity and collaboration. In this video, some of the young men who participated share their experiences with navigating through the obstacles on the course, while relying on one another to succeed as a team.

You can watch some of my take-aways beginning at 6:34 in the recording.
